We can ID this dove as a Zenaida Dove as follows:
  • Very similar to the Mourning Dove, but is smaller and has a shorter, square-tipped tail rather than the long, pointed tail of the Mourning Dove.
  • Overall grayish-brown upper parts.
  • Large blue spot on side of neck.
  • Black splotches on the folded wing.
  • Short, black streak in back of the eye, with a longer black streak at the base of the cheek.
The Zenaida Dove breeds throughout the Caribbean and the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula.

The Zenaida Dove is a new species to our eBird Photographic Life List. Our eBird Life List now stands at 1,117.
