MALE & FEMALE PINE GROSBEAKS, ALGONQUIN PROVINCIAL PARK - VISITOR CENTRE, NIPISSING COUNTY, ONTARIO, 1/24/2026 - NEW SPECIES TO LIFE LIST
We can ID these birds as male and female Pine Grosbeaks as follows:
- Merlin bird photo ID app identified both the male (photos 1& 2) and female (photos 3 & 4) as Pine Grosbeaks.
MALE
- Pinkish-red head with short, dark eyeline.
- Thick, stubby and short blackish bill.
- Pinkish-red underparts with gray flanks (see 9th photo)
- Upper parts: back is a mixture of pinkish-red with dark scalloped appearance; rump is brighter, more solid pinkish-red and wings are dark with white edges.
- Tail is long, dark and slightly notched.
FEMALE
- Yellowish-green head and nape with white patch under eye.
- Thick, stubby and short dark gray bill.
- Underparts is a combination of gray and yellowish tinge.
- Upper parts: Grey back and dark wings with two white wing bars.
- Tail is long, dark and slightly notched.
The Pine Grosbeak is a new species to our ebird Photographic Life List.
