FEMALE BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, ONTARIO CENTRE FOR MENTAL HEALTH SCIENCES, WHITBY, ONTARIO, 1/9/2026 - NEW SPECIES TO LIFE LIST

These are not great photos (the lighting was very bad and distance was great), but we can still ID this duck as a female Barrow's Goldeneye as follows:
  • Merlin bird ID app identified this bird as either a Common Goldeneye or a Barrow's Goldeneye.  Believe it is a female Barrow's Goldeneye for the reasons given below.
  • Its bill is mostly yellow-orange with a black tip and looks stubby. A female Common Goldeneye usually has a mostly black bill with a yellow tip that does not look stubby.
  • It has the steep forehead and flat crown (see 1st photo) of a Barrow's Goldeneye.
  • It has a dark brown head (see 1st photo).  Usually a female Common Goldeneye has a lighter brown head.
The Barrow's Goldeneye is a new species to our ebird Photographic Life List, which now stands at 1,190.
