MALE RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD WITH PUFFED OUT RED EPAULETS (SHOULDER PATCHES) & A FEMALE RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD, CRANBERRY MARSH, LYNDE SHORES CONSERVATION AREA, WHITBY, ONTARIO, 4/23/2025
The first photo shows an adult male Red-winged Blackbird with puffed out red epaulets (shoulder patches). The puffing out of the bird's red epaulets occurs during breeding season,. when they are used for display and attracting female Red-winged Blackbirds. They also get puffed out during territorial displays to warn off other males who might be encroaching on their territory.
