BREEDING MALE RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD PUFFING ITS REDDISH EPAULETTES TO ATTRACT A FEMALE MATE, CELERY FIELDS, PALMER BLVD, SARASOTA, FLORIDA, 4/18/2022
During breeding season male Red-winged Blackbirds will puff up their reddish epaulets and hunch their shoulders to attract a mate. In the first two photos the blackbird has started to hunch its shoulders and by last photo its shoulders are hunched and it epaulets are puffed up. The male Red-winged Blackbird also use the puffing up of their epaulets to mark their territory.
