YELLOW-RUMPED CACIQUE (CACICUS CELA), PIPELINE ROAD,GAMBOA,PANAMA, 5/25/2019

      We can ID this bird as a Yellow-rumped Cacique as follows:
  • Mainly black plumage with bright yellow lower back (as much as we can see), rump and vent
  • Yellow patch on wing
  • Large pale bill
  • Blue eyes

      The Yellow-rumped Cacique is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 899.

FEMALE RED-CAPPED MANAKIN (PIPRA MENTALIS), PIPELINE ROAD,GAMBOA,PANAMA, 5/25/2019

      We can ID this bird as a female Red-capped Manakin as follows:
  • Olive green above, with more yellow-green underparts
  • Short, pinkish bill, wide at base
  • Chubby body and small size, about 4"
  • Short tail
  • Large eye

      The Red-capped Manakin is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 898.

BLACK-STRIPED WOODCREEPER (XIPHORHYNCHUS LACHRYMOSUS), PIPELINE ROAD,GAMBOA,PANAMA, 5/25/2019

      We can ID this Woodcreeper as a Black-striped Woodcreeper as follows:
  • Conspicuous black-and-white streaking on back.
  • Rufous wings and tail (no streaking).
  • Black and buffy streaking on head.
  • Relatively long bill, nearly straight, but slightly downcurved at tip.

      The Black-striped Woodcreeper is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 897.





SCARLET-RUMPED CACIQUE (CACICUS UROPYGIALIS), PIPELINE ROAD,GAMBOA,PANAMA, 5/25/2019

       We can ID this bird as a Scarlet-rumped Cacique as follows:

  • Black plumage, except for scarlet rump
  • Light blue eyes
  •  Pointed whitish bill

      The Scarlet-rumped Cacique is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 896.





MALE PURPLE-THROATED FRUITCROW (QUERULA PURPURATA), PIPELINE ROAD,GAMBOA,PANAMA, 5/25/2019

      We can ID this bird as a male Purple-throated Fruitcrow as follows:
  • Overall black, except for purple-red throat patch. In the second photo, the patch is flared in display.  This happens fairly often.
  • Pale, broad, whitish gray bill.

      The Purple-throated Fruitcrow is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 895.




MALE DOT-WINGED ANTWREN (MICRORHOPIAS QUIXENSIS), PIPELINE ROAD,GAMBOA,PANAMA, 5/25/2019

     We can ID this bird as Dot-winged Antwren as follows:
  • Overall black
  • Bold white dots on wing and single wingbar 
  • White-tipped tail.   In both photos if you look under the belly of the bird you can see the white tips of the tail.

      The Dot-winged Antwren is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 894.
