MALE DOT-WINGED ANTWREN (MICRORHOPIAS QUIXENSIS), PIPELINE ROAD,GAMBOA,PANAMA, 5/25/2019

     We can ID this bird as Dot-winged Antwren as follows:
  • Overall black
  • Bold white dots on wing and single wingbar 
  • White-tipped tail.   In both photos if you look under the belly of the bird you can see the white tips of the tail.

      The Dot-winged Antwren is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 894.

CRIMSON-BACKED TANAGER (RAMPHOCELUS DIMIDIATUS), PIPELINE ROAD,GAMBOA,PANAMA, 5/25/2019

      We can ID this Tanager as a male Crimson-backed Tanager as follows:

  • Bright crimson lower rump and underparts
  • Duller red head, upper back as much as see can see) and upper breast
  • Wings and tail are dark
  • Stout bill with lower mandible enlarged at base (you can see this in second photo)

      The Crimson-backed Tanager is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 893.




SOUTHERN BENTBILL (ONCOSTOMA OLIVACEUM), PIPELINE ROAD,GAMBOA,PANAMA, 5/25/2019

      We can ID this bird as a Southern Bentbill as follows:
  • Small size - about 4"
  • Distinctive thick, downward-curving bill, bent like a broken nose
  • Yellowish irises and whitish lores
  • Yellowish underparts, including throat

      The Southern Bentbill is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 892.




COCOA WOODCREEPER (XIPHORHYNCHUS SUSURRANS), PIPELINE ROAD,GAMBOA,PANAMA, 5/25/2019

      We can ID this Woodcreeper as a Cocoa Woodcreeper as follows:
  • Brownish overall with rufous wings and tail
  • Head and neck are dark brown with buff streaks
  • Almost straight, fairly thick, bicolored bill

      The Cocoa Woodcreeper is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 891.
