THE SNAKEBIRD, NAPLES BOTANICAL GARDEN, NAPLES, FL

      You can see from the first photo why the Anhinga is called the snakebird.  This is from its habit of swimming with its long neck and head sticking out of the water.  The word Anhinga comes from the Brazilian Tupi language, where it means devil bird or snake bird.
