YUCATAN SUBSPECIES OF MALE GOLDEN-FRONTED WOODPECKER, COURTYARD MARRIOTT CANCUN AIRPORT,CANCUN,MEXICO,11/2/2018

        We can ID this woodpecker as the Yucatan subspecies of the Golden-fronted Woodpecker as        follows:
  • On the the Yucatan subspecies of the Golden-fronted Woodpecker the cap, nape and lore are red, while in other subspecies of this woodpecker in other locations they are yellow, golden or orange 
  •  Finely barred black and white upperparts (black bars are wider)
  • Grayish-black bill
  • Grayish head, breast and flanks
  • Black and White barred tail (you can just make this out)
  • Reddish vent

    The Golden-fronted Woodpecker is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 802.

  • Yellow-orange head with black face and throat
  • Black on back, wings and tail
  • Two white wingbars
  • Orange underparts
  • Curved bill

      We can ID this bird as a female Summer Tanager as follows:
  • Orangish underparts
  • Olive-brown uppperparts and tail
  • Prominent white eyering.
       The Summer Tanager is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 800A.

   The male Great-tailed Grackle looses tail feathers after breeding.
