We can ID this bird as a male Phainopepla as follows:
- Overall color that we can see is glossy black-blue
- Short, slender bill
- Noticeable crest
- Red eye
- Long tail

We can ID this bird as a California Thrasher as follows
- Overall grayish brown above.
- Long, dark, down curved bill.
- Grayish buff supercilium (eyebrow)
- Dark eyeline
- Dark cheek pattern
- Long tail

We can ID this woodpecker as a male Nuttall's Woodpecker as follows:
- Red hind crown, black fore crown and white forehead
- Solid black on upper back extending up nape to red crown
- Black face with white stripes above and below the eye. The white stripe above the eye extends down the side of the neck.
- White underparts with black spots
- Black upperparts with white stripes
- Black uppertail
