MALE COPPERY-HEADED EMERALD, SODA Y MIRADOR CINCHONA, SAN FERNANDO, ALAJUELA PROVINCE, 10/11/2022 - NEW SPECIES # 1,070 TO LIFE LIST
We can ID this hummingbird as a male Coppery-headed Emerald as follows:
- Downcurved bill
- Coppery crown. You can particularly see this in the second and third photos
- Glittering green face. throat and underparts
- White outer tail feathers
The Coppery-headed Emerald, which is endemic to Costa Rica, is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 1,070.
MALE PRONG-BILLED BARBET, SODA Y MIRADOR CINCHONA, SAN FERNANDO, ALAJUELA PROVINCE, COSTA RICA, 10/11/2022
We can ID this bird as a male Prong-billed Barbet as follows:
- Stout blue-gray bill
- Red eyes
- Ochre (brown-yellow) cap, face and upper breast
- Nape is also ochre, but with a verticalblack stripe (males only)
- Rest of bird graying with ochre wash in places
The Prong-billed Barbet is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 1,069.
TORRENT TYRANNULET, MOUNTAIN STREAM, ALAJUELA PROVINCE, COSTA RICA, 10/11/2022 - NEW SPECIES # 1,068 TO LIFE LIST
We can ID this tyrant flycatcher as a Torrent Tyrannulet as follows:
- Small size and in exactly its right habitat: fast moving mountain stream perching on rocks and or low branches in or close to the edge of streams
- Dark cap and face with a whitish throat
- Overall a combination of gray and black
The Torrent Tyrannulet is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 1,068.
MALE GARTERED TROGON, ARENAL, PENINSULA ROAD, ALAJUELA PROVINCE, COSTA RICA, 10/11/2022 - NEW SPECIES # 1,067 TO LIFE LIST
We can ID this trogon as male Gartered Trogon as follows:
- Blackish face with a pale yellow eye ring
- Violet-blue upper breast
- Grayish bill
- Yellowish-white breastband shading into yellowish-orange underparts
- Wings we can see are grayish
- Underside of tail has black and white bars
The Gartered Trogon is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 1,067.
FEMALE LONG-TAILED TYRANT, ARENAL-PENINSULA ROAD, ALAJUELA PROVINCE, COSTA RICA, 10/11/2022 - NEW SPECIES # 1,066 TO LIFE LIST
We can ID this tyrant flycatcher as a female Long-tailed Tyrant as follows:
- Very long central tail feathers
- White crown
- Black, short bill
- Overall dull black with mottled white (this IDs it as a female)
The Long-tailed Tyrant is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 1,066.

MALE & FEMALE SCARLET-THIGHED DACNIS, ARENAL OBSERVATORY LODGE, LA FORTUNA, ALAJUELA PROVINCE, COSTA RICA, 10/10/2022 - NEW SPECIES # 1,065 TO LIFE LIST
The male Scarlet-thighed Dacnis is shown in the first photo and the upper right of the third third photo. The female Scarlet-thighed Dacnis is shown in the second photo and the lower left of the third photo.
We can ID the male with its combination of bright turquoise-blue (crown, nape, sides of head, upper back and rump) and black (forehead, lores, lower back and wings we can see). We can ID the female with its buff underparts.
The Scarlet-thighed Dacnis is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 1,065.
