MANDARIN DUCKS & PARROTS, CHINESE EXPORT PAINTINGS EXHIBIT, VARLEY ART GALLERY, UNIONVILLE, ON

   Yesterday we went to the Varley Art Gallery in Unionville and saw an exhibit of 19th century chinese export paintings.  Since this is a birding blog we thought the paitings of various birds would be interesting.  This post and some following posts have photos of these bird paintings.
   In this first post we have included information on the history and description of chinese export paintings.

A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER WAS HERE, COLONEL SAMUEL SMITH PARK, TORONTO, ON

   The small holes in lined up rows on this tree trunk are characteristic of the pecking of a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker.  The sapsucker feeds on the sap and the insects attracted to the sap.  The sapsucker is probably no longer around, having migrated through the area some time ago.
