GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER, COLONEL SAMUEL SMITH PARK, TORONTO, ON



MUTE SWAN IN NEST ROTATING EGGS, COLONEL SAMUEL SMITH PARK, TORONTO, ON

   The first two photos show the Mute Swan rotating its eggs so they can be evenly incubated.  This pair of Mute Swans have been sitting in the nest for quite some time.  It can take up to 2-3 weeks for the female Mute Swan to actually lay her eggs and then she and the male will alternate laying on them for up to about 6 weeks.  So the whole process can take up to  about 8 -9 weeks.

   We can ID these Double-crested Cormorants as juveniles by their necks and chests being so white.



BREEDING RED-NECKED GREBES: ADULT, CHICK & IN NEST, COLONEL SAMUEL SMITH PARK, TORONTO, ON

   In the first photo the adult Red-necked Grebe is on the left and the chick is on the right.  As you can see it looks very different from the adult.  Its head has black and white stripes and it has a short yellow bill.
   The second photo shows an adult in its nest, probably sitting on eggs.  Its mate is shown in the third photo swimming nearby.
