FACEOFF: PILEATED WOODPECKER VS. AMERICAN KESTREL, NAPLES BOTANICAL GARDENS, NAPLES, FL

   The Pileated Woodpecker was on the tree limb, pecking away, when the American Kestrel alighted on the limb.  The woodpecker started advancing toward the kestrel, as if to chase it away, but then backed off.  Eventually they both flew away.

   The American Kestrel is our smallest falcon and is distinctive in its rofous color, which can be seen in both photos.  It is a new specoies to our Life List, which now stands at 235.
