COPPER-RUMPED HUMMINGBIRDS, INCLUDING A FEMALE IN ITS NEST INCUBATING EGGS, HACIENDA JACANA, TALPARO, TRINIDAD & TOBAGO, 3//17/2024

The first two photos show a female Copper-rumped Hummingbird in its nest incubating its eggs. We know it's a female because only the female incubates the eggs. A male and female hummingbird may mate several times in a few minutes, but afterwards, their relationship ends and the male quickly leaves.

MALE CRIMSON-CRESTED WOODPECKER, HACIENDA JACANA, TALPARO, TRINIDAD & TOBAGO, 3/17/2024 - NEW SPECIES TO OUR LIFE LIST

We can ID this woodpecker as a male Crimson-crested Woodpecker as follows:
  • Red head with yellow eye with dark eye-ring
  • Black and white patch on cheek. You can see this in the second photo. This distinguishes the male from the female and the Crimson-crested Woodpecker from the very similar Lineated Woodpecker.
  • Black upperparts with a white V on back.  This also distinguishes the Crimson-crested Woodpecker from other large woodpeckers, such as the Lineated Woodpecker.
The Crimson-crested Woodpecker is found in Panama, Trinidad and in every mainland South American country except Chile and Uruguay.

The Crimson-crested Woodpecker is a new species to our ebird Photographic Life List.  Our ebird Life List now stands at 1,129.
