EURASIAN HOBBY IN FLIGHT, MOUNT PARNITHA FOOTHILLS,AVLONA,ATTICA,GREECE, 10/20/2019

   We can ID this raptor as a Eurasian Hobby as follows:
  • Long, slate-gray (see third photo for color), pointed wings
  • Dark head contrasting strongly with whitish cheeks, chin, throat and neck sides; also whitish eyebrows (see third photo)    
  • Darkish below
  • Bold streaking on breast and belly
  • Rufous undertail-coverts and vent  
  • Barred  undertail     
   The Eurasian Hobby is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 968.

MALE EURASIAN BLACKCAP, MOUNT PARNITHA FOOTHILLS,AVLONA,ATTICA,GREECE, 10/10/2019

   We can ID this bird as a male Eurasian Blackcap as follows:
  • Pale gray head and neck with black cap
  • Dark eye with whitish eyering below and darker eyering (but lighter than cap) above
  • Straight bill with blackish culmen  
  • Grey-brown upperparts  
  • Pale grey underparts  

   The Eurasian Blackcap is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 967.




SOMBRE TIT, MOUNT PARNITHA FOOTHILLS,AVLONA,ATTICA,GREECE, 10/10/2019

    We can ID this bird as a Sombre Tit as follows:

  • Habitat - lower down on mountain slopes in rocky terrain with trees and bushes
  • Blackish cap that extends down nape and fairly far down onto head sides
  • Large blackish bib covering whole of throat and chin
  • Whitish cheek, ear-coverts and side of neck under rear of cap, sullied brownish near neck.   
  • Brown upperparts   
  • Pale brownish flanks  
  • Greyish legs  

   The Sombre Tit is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 966.
