NONBREEDING BLACK-HEADED GULL, TAGUS ESTUARY,LISBON,PORTUGAL, 9/29/2019

   We can ID this gull as a nonbreeding Black-headed Gull as follows:
  • Dark cheek spot on white head
  • Reddish legs
  • Silvery-grey above
  • White underparts

   The Black-headed Gull is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 922.

BLACK REDSTART, TAGUS ESTUARY, LISBON,PORTUGAL, 9/29/2019

   We can ID this bird as a Black Redstart as follows:
  • Overall blackish to dark gray
  • Orange-red tail
  • Short, thin black bill

   The Black Restart is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 921.

EURASIAN COLLARED DOVE, ESTRADA DAS HORTAS, ALCOCHETE COUNTY, SETUBAL,PORTUGAL, 9/29/2019

   We spent the day birding with our birding guide, Rui Morgado.  He was great;  he knew where to go to see the birds on our target list and he was great fun to be be with.   We would definitely recommend him to any birder's looking for a guide in the Lisbon area.

COMMON MOORHEN OR EURASIAN MOORHEN, GULBENKIAN MUSEUM & GARDEN,LISBON,PORTUGAL, 9/28/2019

   We can ID this rail as a Common or Eurasian Moorhen (Gallinula chloropus) as follows:
  • Red bill with yellow tip
  • Red frontal shield that has a rounded top and fairly parallel sides
  • Dark plumage (slate gray and brown) with white patches on tail  and white streaks along flanks

   The Common Moorhen is distributed across many parts of the Old World.  Is is not found in the polar regions or many tropical rainforests.

   The Common Moorhen is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 920A.
