MALE YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, FRONT PARKING LOT, WINN-DIXIE,27680 BERMONT RD.,PUNTA GORDA,FLORIDA, 1/14/2019

This male Yellow-headed Blackbird has been a continuing bird at this location.  It has been reported on ebird and SW Florida Bird Alert.  There were about 1/2 dozen birders looking for it.  It was finally spotted underneath a red pickup truck.  Since it was underneath the truck and in its shadow it was difficult to see and photograph.  It flew from underneath the truck to a nearby tree, where eventually it came out in the open.

The last photo shows the bird underneath the truck in its shadow.  It is hard to make out.  All the other photos are of the bird when it was out in the open on the tree.

We can ID this bird as a male Yellow--headed Blackbird as follows:
  • Black body with yellow or orange-yellow head, neck and chest
  • Conical, black pointed bill
  • Black mask.

The Yellow-headed Blacbird is found in the summer in the Western U.S.  In the winter these birds migrate to Southwestern U.S. and Mexico.  It is rare in Eastern U.S., including Florida.

The Yellow-headed Blacbird is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 840.
