MALE SOUTHERN MASKED WEAVER, MARIEVALE BIRD SANCTUARY, JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

   We can ID this bird as a male Southern Masked Weaver by its black mask, red eyes, yellow underparts and  mostly greenish back.
   The Southern Masked Weaver is a new species to our Life List, which now stands at 324.

   We can ID this bird as a male Southern Red Bisho by its bright red and black plumage.
   The Southern Red Bishop is a new species to our Life List, which now stands at 323.



RED-EYED DOVE, COURTYARD HOTEL, JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

   We can ID this dove as a Red-eyed Dove by its dull reddish eye, dull reddish ring around eye, buffy colored tip of tail and and black patch on neck.
   The Red-eyed Dove is a new species to our Life List, which now stands at 322.



SOUTHERN FISCAL, COURTYARD HOTEL, JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA, 11/3/2016

   We can ID this shrike as a Southern Fiscal by its location in Johannesburg and by its black and white pattern, long tail and white shoulder patches.  The Southern Fiscal was previously lumped together with the Northern Fiscal as the the Common Fiscal.  This species was split into the Northern Fiscal and Southern Fiscal.  The two species can be found together in Angola, Tanzania and Zambia.  The Northern Fiscal is found north of these countries and the Southern Fiscal soouth of them.
   The Southern Fiscal is a new species to our Life List, which now stands at 321.

AFRICAN SACRED IBIS WITH WINGS UNFURLED, COURTYARD HOTEL, JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA


BLACKSMITH LAPWING, COURTYARD HOTEL, JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

   We can ID this plover as a Blacksmith Lapwing by its bold black, white and gray pattern, black legs and wing spur.
   The Blacksmith Lapwing is a new species to our Life List, which now stands at 320.



HADEDA IBIS, COURTYARD HOTEL, JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA

   We can ID this ibis as a Hadeda Ibis by its overall gray-brown color, gray face with whitish stripe from bill to below and behind eye and gray bill with red ridge on the upper mandible.
   The Hadeda Ibis is a new species to our Life List, which now stands at 319.
