MALE NORTHERN SHOVELER, CRANBERRY MARSH, LYNDE SHORES CONSERVATION AREA, WHITBY, ON

   We can ID this duck as a male Northern Shoveler by its rufous flanks and belly, its white breast and its large bill.  This is a " dabbling" duck, as can be seen in the second photo, where it has upended itself to reach deeper food.  It rarely dives.
