MALE SCRUB EUPHONIA, HOTEL RIU GUANACASTE AREA,PLAYA DE MATAPALO,GUANACASTE, COSTA RICA,6/12/18

   We can ID this bird as a male Scrub Euphonia by its location at Playa de Matapalo (other similar Euphonias, such the Spot-crowned Euphonia, do no overlap its range); blue-black head, chest and upperparts with bright yellow forecrown; bright yellow underparts; short tail and blue, short and stubby bill.
   The Scrub Euphonia is primarily frugivorous, eating the berries of the mistletoe and many other small fruits, including figs.  It is a resident bird, although post-breeding it may wander locally.
   The Scrub Euphonia is a new species to our Photographic Life List, which now stands at 786.
