THE PILEATED WOODPECKER & THE EUROPEAN STARLINGS, NAPLES BOTANICAL GARDEN,NAPLES,FLORIDA, 2/26/2019

This European Starling (most likely a male) seems to be building a nest in a cavity (which we could not see) on the other side of this tree.  The Pileated Woodpecker came along on the same tree and seems to have taken over the cavity as its nest.  The European Starling continues to try to bring fresh green material to the cavity, but while we were watching was never able to.  You can see this in the 8th and 9th photos, where the Starling seems to approach the tree with its greens and then bypasses it.  The Pileated Woodpecker was probably in the cavity.  None of the birders in our group saw the Woodpecker fly away.
